A message from our Founder and Managing Director, Sally Carpenter

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Featherbed

It was back in 1986 when I started Featherbed Nanny Agency, placing not just Nannies but companions, cleaners, housekeepers, and gardeners. I was privileged at the time to be introduced to Prince Charles, now King Charles, which, along with the publicity it brought, kick-started the business.

When the recession hit in the early nineties, the demand for domestic staff and nannies fell, but the need for companions and carers grew, which led me to change the agency’s name to Featherbed Homecare.

Only a few care agencies existed until the mid-nineties when profound changes were made concerning social care. The government set up a new commission, which opened the floodgates to many wanting to start care agencies.

I never intended for Featherbed to become a large agency or have franchises everywhere. I believe in staying small, always knowing who our clients and carers are, providing excellent personal service, and being available to offer help and advice.

We are one big family and hope our clients and carers feel the same.

My aim has always been to help people stay in the comfort of their own homes where they can retain their independence and choice.

My parents needed care before they died, and providing live-in carers gave them the security and reassurance that they were going to be well looked after. It also drove me to want to help everyone live out their lives by having that special care and companionship as my Parents did.
Many carers have been with the agency for years and are wonderful people.

During the last 40 years, I have been privileged to help many people from different walks of life, from Royals and Celebrities to family, friends, and people who were neighbours when I was a child.

People ask me if I will ever retire, and so far, the answer is no; I love helping people too much.

They provided us with the most wonderful carer, Lucy, who stayed with Mum for long periods of time and gave amazing support to us as family. The one problem we had was addressed quickly and effectively, and with that one exception, the carers Featherbed provided were superb - very caring and helpful, totally honest and understanding. His carer, Julia, was fantastic and I can honestly say that we couldn't have coped without her. They provided 24 hour care for my mom who is in her 90's for over a year in her own home. The care and efficiency was second to none. They were always there with advice and always there to listen. Splitting them up after 60yrs of happy marriage would have been unthinkable.  Despite initial reservations my parents quickly accepted live in care and much enjoyed having company in the house. Much credit is due to the carers who were all lovely and very caring . I have no hesitation in recommending Featherbed
